The pure yellow flower form of Iris pseudopumila

Post by MWP admin »

Hi, I was informed about a population of Iris pseudopumila Tineo in Gozo (found around year 2000 and I think by Miss Shirley Ann Micallef), where its flower colour was never been found out. I searched and searched and finally found the small population today!

To my amazement, it was a new flower form for the Maltese Islands - consisting of pure yellow form without any violet patches in the down tepals but these were slightly more intense in colour from the standards. The beard was yellow at the base and gradually changing to white. Only 2 flowers in bloom. Dimensions of flower same as the varigated yellow form.

I just want to share this with you.

Great find. I have never encountered any of the yellow forms so far. Well done.

Thanks mate!

So far I found only one small patch of this form and was a surprise to everyone that this form existed in Malta. The strangest of all is despite the Iris pseudopumila (sensu lato) is not that rare (some 10 stations in Malta & Gozo), it was only discovered in 1970s by a person with nom de plume "wayfarer" I mean it is a quite conspicuous plant with nice flowers and often in dense patches so it is a surprise to be firs published only 40 years ago!
