water bug

this looks like conchiolin territory - a sort of water bug sharing one of the few remaining wet rock pools at wied incita with a couple of huge frogs ...any idea what it could be ? I would say it was a good 3cm in lenght

I really don't have the faintest idea. If i had to take a shot i would say it's a larvae perhaps an insect at the nymph stage perhaps the nymph of the dragon fly, Anax Imperator.

What i can observe is it is really camouflaged with the muddy water.

Imma , i am no expert so.......

thanks...guess I will have to look up wildlife of the maltese islands book ! yes good camouflage but water was very dirty too - most rock pools at incita are polluted unfortunately

Mr.wolf i looked that up in the book it really resembles the nymph stage of the dragon fly (check out pg166 pic13 c the larva). A friend of mine told me the same thing it's a nymph of the anax imperator but still he's no expert. He told me the nymph is also carnivorous.

yep - youre very probably correct about id - had no idea this one starts life under water

btw one VERY strange thing at wied incita last sunday was one plant of clematic cirrhosa in flower !!! remember this usually flowers in oct-dec ....weird !

Forgot to say i'm kidding, of course.

Wolf i think in one topic i don't know which exactly, Jackpot mentioned something about succesful flowering and seeding of plants out of season and this way they have an advantage over other plants that haven't germinated 'off season' that would otherwise have competed for root space, mineral salts and surface area for photosynthesis.

I forgot exactly what he called this phenomenon but it's very interesting.

If anybody could point in which topic was this said, I would greatly appreciate it.
