could be a gall from Stipa?

Yes it is, and no I have a doubt!

Yes, it is found on the awns of Stipa capensis.

When I broke open the 'swollen structure' I could not find any insect, eggs, larvae, or whatsoever. It seems to hypertrophy of the tissue. So it like a cancer, though I do not really know if by definition it can be called a gall.

The swollen structure is so hard, that I had to break it with my teeth. It is like to be consitsing of an accumulation of crystalized silicate!
