no man needs a holiday as much as the man who just had one.
It is a Pygmy Skipper - Gegenes pumilio or a Mediterranean Skipper - Genenes nostradamus (very difficult to see on a picture).
Probably a Pygmy based on this: http://www.mepa.org.mt/environment/inde ... base.asp&1 (choose 'insects' and then find 'pygmy')

Gegenes pumilio
Hi,
Definitely it's a male Gegenes pumilio. This is the only recorded skipper in Malta till now. The markings of G. nostrodamus are different.
Well done for the photo. I really like it

I also have seen one skipper recorded from Malta.
BUT I found this link, which shows a skipper, that is NOT a Gegenes:
http://www.searchmalta.com/cgi-local/ph ... =3&brand=0
In fact, I am pretty sure that the picture shows a Large Skipper Ochlodes faunus.
Of Course, I have no idea of the quality of this observation, but the the fact that the observer thought that she was photografing a pretty flower makes it interesting.
I spend my summer holliday, may 17 - 24 2008, in Malta, and I was looking especially for this species since I know it very well from Denmark where it is very common.
Any comments Jonathan??
