I think some hundreds disappeared and the actual number does not exceed 700 at present.
Stephen- this is an extremely difficult question and a fast answer could be dangerous (because it could be used from special groups in a counterproductively way, what we do not want). Example: you have lost a special Maltese variety (I think about an Ophrys variety) but a new distribution of an alien (e.g. Cardiospermum species), not mentioned in Borg or Haslam, and this happens 100 times. Some people could concloude: everything is ok- we still have 1000 species.

Thank you for your reply. I can undertand that some new aliens have been introduced but as an observer, in my opinion we have quite less from 1000, as more have been lost than introduced.
Also I have to mention that Haslam also features a number of agricultural plants like tomato, potato, artichokes, etc which I dont consider wild.
Yes it is a difficult question, and I think no one can give a precise answer, unless one have to spend some 5 years with all his life roaming in the wilderness tracking for all plants.
I can assume that you have been around Malta for many years searching for new plants and you have arrived up to 500 species right?
The more wild land we sell for construction, and pollution we introduce, the more rare wild plants we loose. The alien plants also inroduces severe competition to some fragile native plants. A pity

no Stephen- not as bad. My search was over the last 3 years period and I found 550 species (without grown ornamentals or agric. plants). But the Maltese Botanist No.1 told me that there are still 800 indigenous and 200 aliens...

I am considering to go to Romeo Romano gardens after work today and see if I meet the tree (hope still in flower). I am not sure if I will identify it since I am not good in ornamentals, but I try to study the morphology and arrive to the Genus.
Tip: is it reported in Haslam's book at least?

Yes 1ry pinnate and if I remember well with terminal leaflet. However it was not in flower at Romeo Romano.

what a funny story I was there in August 2004 for the Maltese Ornamentals. I noticed 3 older men chatting on the chairs near the fountain. Surreptitious I collected a small twig from an unknown tree for herbarium search at home. Then, I went to the Sausage Tree (Kigelia africana) for pictures. The men called me and I was frightened (I felt catch me red-handed
) but they only wanted to show me another tree where I could get easier the flowers! Then, we chatted together for at least 1 hour!! Hey, I know that Malta is small, but in fact, it is a hicksville
