Ulmus in Malta

Hi, what Ulmus species you think we have in Malta?

I have 'isolated' (is that a good word!?) 2 species, one of which should correspond to U. minor (though hmm...! the tree I found had a 70cm trunk and wonder if it is older the British colony), while the other is siad to be Ulmus canescens, but I have my doubts.

Some authors have suggested U. procera while others (eg Weber et al.) Ulmus glabra, but the latter is described to be found in mountains and a rather Northern distribution. Morphologicaly, I tend to lean with U. glabra, though some morphological features does not fit perfectly either!

It would be interesting to hear what you have to say in regards.

actually from records I have read in the past, all 4 seem to have been mentioned!

Which records specifically ? Haslan mentions only 2 (canescens and minor) and J. Borg gives U. campestris which should be attributed to canescens according to Haslam. I think we have 2 entites and hybrids.

i'm very busy at the moment.
haslam and borg mention what you said.
the book sigar maltin, mentions these:
U.procera from the area of Burmarrad which Haslam thought was U.minor.
Buskett plants are all U.minor.
U.canescens the native species from Gnien il-Kbir and Wied ir-Rum (no idea where both places are)
Finally they mention that at Wied l-Isqof there are Ulmus species that cannot be identified and seem to be hybrids between U.minor and U.canescens

At the moment I made my opinion that we have U.minor and U. glabra (I agree with Weber here) though I did not checked U. procera yet.

I am also aware of the hybrids, which I also found at Buskett recentely (hence not really correct that those in Buskett are all U.minor).

Weber/Edwin are those to teach us. But well I started to gather some info.
