ID of a non spectacular grass

Post by MWP admin »

I used to know this plant but after 3 months break. it remained unlabelled and could not figure out its name. Was it a type of Bromus?

Please measure the lemma's; Bromus madritenis 12-20 mm, B. rubens 9-13 mm.

Thanks RutgerB,

Bromus diandrus has a quite different structure, so I am quite confident on B. madritensis.

I ment B. rubens. Looks the same (also a bit reddish), but is of a different size. Hard to see on a picture.

Yes, now your comment makes more sense re Bromus rubens

Image of Bromus rubens from the internet:

From the species name, B. rubens should be reddish, but the measurments are the distinguishing features. I will recheck the plants next year if I find them.

Welcome to the MaltaWildPlants form Daniel :-)

I never checked the population again, and it goes around Bromus madritensis, Bromus rubens and Bromus fasciculatus, distinguished by measurments which cannot be accessed from these photo.

B. rubens would be my wish as I do not have photos of it!

Here yoa can see the two "extremes"...but sometimes it's really difficult to distinguish !!
The real character is the "lema"
rubens : lanceolated 2x15 mm
fasciculatus : linear 1x12 mm (and curved)
