Galium troubles

Sometimes, simple things becomes difficult (or the literature is not so good!)

I have found this young specimen that is a Galium species and a hydrophyte.

The spines are patent to forward projecting so from Haslam it should be either G. verrucosum or G. murale.

The former is described to have narrow leaves and glabrous above (I am assuming no spines) and the latter is not a hydrophyte (arid rocky places). Both do not fit well. G. aparine have backward projecting spines and narrow leaves.

wait the flower or fruit.... that's the best thing to do. I also think that since the plant is young, the leaves are not 100% typical as per description of an adult plant.

I am sure this is only a common galium

This was G. aparine since I followed it later in May. It can be quite invasive in watercourses, along with the giant reeds. In May-Jun, the socks and slippers will be covered with the fruit and wastes a nice 20mins of my life to clean them up.

yes, I supposed, due to the spines even on young leaves...
