urgent help needed!!!

Post by afarez »

I am a biology, sixth form student and I would like some help in the identification of the following plant:

Opuntia microdyasis

I would like to know the common name both in english and in maltese if possible. I already found the english common name for it but I'm not sure if it is 'The Teddy Bear Cactus' or 'Bunny Ears Cactus'.

Thanks in advance.[/u][/i]

No Maltese name!

Post by MWP admin »

I had some time to look the species name in the God-father book of the wild plants of Malta (where every wild plant that has appeared in Malta is in this book). I am referring to "Flora of Maltese Islands" by Haslam, Sell and Wolseley (found in Melitensia libraries)

Looking at the index of this book, this cactus is not mentioned there, which simply means that the plant is not a maltese plant and so it would have no maltese name.

If it is some sort of ornamental cactus, you would have a small chance to get info by contacting cactus sellers, but they would give you some maltese nick at the most

Hello Ruth (a german name!): I think you mean Opuntia microdasys (Lehm.) Pfeiff., not O. microdyasis. I know this one as Bunny Ear, but there are several varieties, therefore, you will find several English names. I am very sure that there is no Maltese name, but you can translate Bunny and Ear...
