Maltawildplants.com is now considered an online flora of the Maltese islands, portraying more than 900 species of plants found in Maltese habitats. It harbours a forum created in 2005 were memberes discuss topics about the Maltese flora and ID of plants.
Hi guys,
3 new quizzies...
a111. a non-botanical one: where is this in Malta?
b222. an ornamental plant (frequently grown in Malta)
c333. a wild one (common distributed in the wild)
C: I am eating so much here that I was going to say Blåbär - Vaccinium myrtillus (looks a bit like the pic) but of course, these forest berries are not found in Malta.
Hint to b222:
it is a tree grown in Malta`s public gardens (San Anton, Romeo Romano, The Palace (courtyard of the Grandmaster’s Palace “Prince Albert”).
Ahhh OK! I have one of these it is now about 3-4 m high but I forgot the name. I think that I only saw these in public gardens. Nice tree! I do not think I ever looked so close at the seeds though except a long time ago, when I sowed the seeds for this one I have.
ok, next time you have a cappucino at Cordina you can change your mental note into the real name of this tree by moving the few steps to the Palace: I will pay your Cappu in spring 08 in the case you write the real name in this forum until the end of this month
I had a vague guess on Ailanthus and Sambucus, but on checking up, they are not the quiz plant (and RB would have guessed before to these plants). Are there any more clues left?
I repeat my hint: it is a tree grown in Malta`s public gardens and showing the name label (e.g. in San Anton Gardens, or in The Palace: courtyard of the Grandmaster’s Palace “Prince Albert”, close to Cafe Cordina in Valletta).
Actually, it is Harpullia pendula, but interestingly, in Malta all labelled trees have the wrong name “Sapindus indica”. In fact the name Sapindus indicus exists, which is a synonym of the true Sapindus saponaria, which is also present in San Anton (as well as the Fabatschea Sophora japonica, ok, well done, RB).
It's true, I found a couple of mistakes in the names at San Anton Garden, and time ago I have raised the problem in the forum. It is a shame knowing that students are often taken to this garden for educational purposes.
Finally I found the image which looks same as Quiz B. I was wondering what is the difference between Harpullia arborea and Harpullia pendula ? I identified mine as H. arborea but not sure now?!
