Holoschoenus

Post by MWP admin »

I was sorting this plant into Holoschoenus vulgaris (=Scirpus holoshoenus) but i got a 2nd tought on something else such as Scirpus lacustris.

This is becasue the heads are reddish brown, numerous and the bract is shorter from the inflorescence. On the other hand I dont think that the stems where 15mm thick as described by Haslam for S. lacustris. Also the spiklets where not 5-8mm long, and would say 2-4mm as for H. vulgaris.

I think that this is a variety of Scirpus holoschoenus, that is S. holoschoenus var. globiferus.

Yes exactly, but one of our Pioneers (CG or Borg) described a variety of it (var. globiferus) and it seems to be more common than the 'typical;' one as described in Flora europea.

Well, in the website it will be only as S. holoschoenus with a remark in the profile about the var.

Pine are you ready for some data input - that time has arrived. Most coding is performed!

It is Holoschoenus. This is a very variable species with numerous described varieties. The var. globiferus is actually uncommon. It has smaller heads which are very numerous and the closest i've seen are plants at Migra l-Ferha.

Actually these populations were found not far away from Migra l-Ferha, more or less along that lane under the cliffs where there are lots of clay-soiled fields and a patch of Arundo Donax.

For simplicity I stick to Holoschoenus vulgaris

Thanks Edwin, and maybe you have some time to review some other non Identified poaceae ...
