Moth

Is this the endemic hawk moth. I was told that there are two species in Malta - can it be identified from the photo, or the differences are minimal?

PS - I have not tampered with the wing of the insect - it was found like that on Euphorbia melitensiscovered by Cascuta spp. Probably today's strong wind has caused this

There are six species of hawk moth in Malta (excluding another one which has only been recorded a couple of times) - two of these are somewhat similar to the one in your photo (Hyles sp.)

Your photo is not the endemic H. sammuti (H.tithymali sammuti) - it is in fact Hyles livornica (Striped hawk moth) - considered to be common (as is H. sammuti)
