I don't know why but I always seem to confuse it with Laurus nobilis, then I smell the leaves....

The smell is a good distinguishing feature. You can't miss them at wied Hark Hammiem ("St.Georges Valley")

I think everyone knew it and everyone wanted to leave it for someone else to have some fun... but there was no-one else left!!

PINE - The size/shape of the leaves (except in photos where you lose scale) is also an instant distinguishing feature from Laurus, even juvenile specimens/seedlings of Laurus have larger more elongated leaves.
