Shrub/small tree what's this?

Looks like a seriously deficient bay leaf, laurus nobilis from a distance, but the leaves are not at all aromatic, and smaller.

Bush/tree was about 2.5 m high and rather rounded, on the garigue at Wardija, incidentally I also found some muscari which Stephen probably was referring to.

Looks like Laurus nobilis to me.

Looks like but isn't, first indicator was that crushed leaves only smell of, guess what, crushed leaves. Looked it up. Book says Rhamnus alaternus, Med. Buckthorn and this site below seems to confirm, especially see the note about the leaves veins.

Incidentally this site is malta-related!

Leaves very variable, but can easily be recognised as the first two secondary veins arise from the base of the main vein.

It is a very indicative feature in your pic (basal forked veins)
