ok- some hints: a very close (but larger one) relative was presented with pics in this forum few months ago- the plant loves to climb up Xanthium in valleys!

Still no idea - I only saw Xanthium at Chadwick lakes, and did not see any plants climbing over it

Have you given a look / considered Veronica cym.? Myself, I would prefer number of stamens rather than fruit at first. (or both together of course!)

A hybrid sort of thing ? Is the fruit/flower shown typical?

4 petals 4 sepals 6 stamens and not brassicaceae? hmmm... getting to my limits jackpot, sorry. Do you confirm the figures mentioned here?

The fruit looks like Cardiospermum, known in Homoeopatic and Indian Medizin.

Hello GREENHORN!!! I missed you and I was close to ask you via email if everything is ok!
Il-Pine: it is not an ornamental! Greenhorn, again applaus- you are right with the genus!

Halicacabum???? The only one I know, is grandiflorum, and that should be larger.

I think that greenhorn deserves the beer not me - once you confirmed that greenhorn identified the genus, it was than easy to get the species.

With the flower only, i had absolutely no idea. When you put the pictures of the fruit I immediately thought of Cardiospermum, but I was under the (obviously very wrong) impression that only C. grandiflorum is present in Malta (and even that I first learnt from one of your previous quizzes) and so thought that it must be something else I knew nothing about

How frequent is C. halicacabum? I guess it is a recent introduction to our flora. Could it be invasive? Can you suggest a location where i can find it?

robcar: I know only 1 location (Ghajn Rihana)- at the bridge of its crossing main road, go to the left hand side, you will find it together with Xanthium, Typha and Alisma at the last pool before the path divides to the right and to the left.
