hupps, greenhorn, you are right- sorry, I forgot to note that the stem grows upright (just to save space I moved it horizontally)! No, I did not remove anything, and furthermore, I can add that it is almost in flower.

Ups!!!! When You said : Poaceae no, I forgot the Typhaceae and Cyperaceae too! Now: what`s about Carex? Sometimes ago i saw a pic of C. wahuensis, which looked quite similar.

Of course! Carex is unisexual. It will be Cyperus, from the length of the spike could be mallacensis, but that You don`t find in Haslam.

Is the inflorescence how it looks when fresh, or is it dried?

individual florets looks a bit like Fabaceae (or with keel like structure)

not Scirpus
(original plant- pic was made in April at a natural habitat of Malta- not shaved, not dried....)- I only moved the pic in a horizontal position instead of upright :)

robcar has not got the faintest idea what it could be but is far too busy to spend time trying to look up possible answers in the literature or on the net - but he is still thoroughly enjoying the rest racking their brains trying to arrive somewhere, till now without much success till now

No further idea!!! Schoenus is hermaphrodite ( Haslam ), but I never saw it in nature and on the photos it looks more stocky.
There is a Cyperacea "Galilea", might be, this one is a brandnew
Christiana???
