Fallow field species

Post by wolf »

I always find that recently ploughed fallow fields are good places to search for strange stuff so here are a few things to mull over and perhaps identify

A1 - this is the most curious of the lot - the plant in total is less than an inch high and I do not think I have ever seen it before

A2 -A fumaria of course but inflorescence a rather darkish pinkand perhaps not too common -inflorescence about 3inches high - plant erect and 9 - 12 inches high....fumaria densiflora perhaps ?

A3 - very common fumaria rather greyish leaves - smaller inflorescence ..invariably found in fields - any idea what species ?

A4 - this looks a bit like Scandix pecten-veneris but there is no sign of the " pecten " ! I am confused about this one

All photos taken today

Any ideas ?

A1 very easy wolf - Boraginaceae - Heliotropium europeaum,

A2-A3: ask the fumaria experts. They are even puzzling for them

A4: I think it is the species you mentioned. Any other spp of the same genus in Haslam ?

I have never seen heliotropium this small but I think you are probably correct. Perhaps scandix too - and yes the fumarias give headaches to us all

The brightly coloured Fumaria is F. officinalis; the whitish one could be a variant of F. officinalis (if flowers c. 9-10mm long) or F. muralis if flowers some 12mm long.
