New Book about Maltese flora - 500 plants listed!
A new pocket book about the Maltese flora will be available in spring this year! The book is written by Dr. Hans Christian Weber (and co-author Bernd Kendzior)!
Dr. Weber is an expert in this field and also one who helps us a lot in this forum to identify our plants we encounter here and there around the Maltese island.

Quoting Weber about the description of his book:
In this field guide more than 500 species of vascular plants found in Malta are considered, not only the most prevalent species but also rare ones, introduced or indigenous, as well as many of the endemic species that grow nowhere else in the world. The guide provides short descriptions with notes to the flowering time, place of origin, occurrence and distribution in the Maltese Islands, completed by more than 600 excellent full-colour photographs.
An invaluable aid for all plant lovers in Malta, especially students and teachers, or scientists and tourists from all over the world.
Mail order is possible. See prices and ordering details on this link

We should support all activities and products that improve the flora and so the environment of Malta.
This book has 3 big advantages over books available in our libraries:
1) Small size, easy to carry with you in the field.
2) The only book that illustrates more than 500 plants.
3) Very easy to identify plants.
I hence recommend this book for easy identification of Maltese Wild Plants. It's a must for all nature lovers who go for long walks in the Maltese countryside and want to know what flowers they are meeting. Good work!!!

More info about the book
Dear Prof. Weber,
The much awaited book is soon to be on our local shelves. Can you tell us some Features of the book and how it is arranged and how one use the book to identify a plant that he encounters in situ.

MWP thanks for your interest!
This book is the first result (and the base) of a project about the Maltese Flora. The next edition (probably after about 3 years) will be expanded with about 100 more species and a family key.
Now the book includes:
10 pages introduction with 16 pics-
154 pages descriptions (3-4 species each page) at the left hand side and 154 pages each with 4 pics at the right hand side like the attached example (of course with better quality). Arrangement in systematic order. The text for each species is structured in: Scientific name, English name, Maltese name, Main Synonyms, Family, Origin, Flowering time, Occurence & Distribution in Malta, Descriptions (and sometimes Remarks).
Finally, several pages with citations-glossary-register-and a list of the introduced species in 4 languages (scietific, english, maltese, german).
Regards, HCW

Bought one during valletta's "notte bianca". Was probably the best way to escape from the zillions of people that there were everywhere, to pop into a bookshop! It's a fantastic book, definitely.
I was lucky in the sense that in my mind, I had the image of Weber's previous book, the one with the Cistus on the front, and I was almost going to buy that! Then I noticed the other one on the shelf...
I think that with this book and this, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wild-Flowers-Me ... 0713670150 one has all the coverage necessary. The one bug about Blamey's is that it is illustrated rather than with photos, and sometimes nothing beats a photo for quick ID. Blamey's is extremely comprehensive in coverage however, I think there are close to 2000 species. These two books together are a fantastic combination.

Due to a misunderstanding there is a mistake on page 163 (see topic unknown bush in this section), which will be corrected in the next edition. Until yesterday, we did not recognize this because this happened at the very last stage of corrections. However, please, feel free to print this attached pic and exchange it with pic 2 on page 163.

"Quota" does not mean that this filesize is too large - but that apparently there is a limit to the TOTAL number of files you have ever uploaded (e.g. maybe you uploaded 200 pics of 40kb up to now) so you may upload no more. This is not an "error" but something for MWP to adjust to a higher level so that you may continue posting pics.
