Well, I tried to figure out why Pine and Rob could not participate and that was the most logical reason... Is it Hyacinth?
Perhaps an albino of the common Grape Hyacinth?

Interesting plant... looks the flowers are double-form ! Will go into research. I think I have seen a pic like that in the past, either in my archive, or some person asked me what it is by email.

PS- have you another 'more clear' photo?

true Pine - I managed correct identification 5 minutes after I got home by just having a look at the beautiful med flora book we both own ( maybe MWP got his stolen too ??? )

actually the stem was a bloody good hint if you have the book on med flora by blamey and grey-wilson ... best book around - pine has a copy too

I got it from haslam and it does not mention anything special about the scape else that it is 15-30cm high. What does the book says about the flowering stalk then?

The only hyacinth-type of flower in Haslam's book (about 7) with "Flowers off-white" is Bellevalia romanus. On checking pics on the net it matched well with the photo.

Where I can trace the plant in Malta, I would like to have a look too!

I found the book for sale on Amazon and maybe I buy it together with that of DelForge from this site. It is exactly called "Wild Flowers of the Mediterranean".

How good this book is ?

In general I hate the term "Wild flowers" as it sounds not botanically professional.

It is a good book as it gives brief descriptions of many plants. However it mentions only one endemic - Romulea melitensis. No photographs however, only handpaintings.

The book is a very good book, in fact it is has been considered as the best general book about Mediterranean wild flowers for a long time. Although there are no photos it is excellent for identification, although obviously many of our plants are not listed, but you are bound to find something similar (same genus), so than you can continue your search in Haslam.

Hand paintings are often much better than photos for identification, since any important features can be shown and are generally the preferred choice of botanists, although amateurs generally like photos better.

So yes MWP I suggest you do get the book

Thanks folks, maybe one of you can show it to me next Sunday for better evaluation. The important thing about Identification either illustrations or photos is how the separating keys are set up. I like the botanical way starting with dicots vs monocots.
