Sdravkos mean little quiz

Post by Sdravko »

because I do not want to be too mean you get a picture of the whole plant. It is a very rare native of Malta, but maybe not so rare because it is easy to overlook

Gosh how small... I never seen it. How did you noticed the tiny plant, perhaps while searcing for the dropped coin on the grass

I will search on my sources when I have time, but I think Jack is already typing the species name while I'm writing this

At that size, I would probably overlook it even if it were as common as Oxalis.

No idea till now, and no time available to try and think (= look in books) of something.

No wolf, its not Wolffia arrhiza DW - that's really really small! (about the tail of the ballotra on the 1c coin or in better words about 2mm high, rootless plant with oval opposite leaves.

Tha photo shows a simple dicot plant with soliary terminal flowers. I just wish to know the number of petals.

Crucifers are usually raceme type of inflor. I admit though that flower looks like a dwarf dwarf dwarf Diplotaxis eurocoides

The detail of the flower is near to zero :-( I would fire Papaver/ranunculus/Asteraceae. At least we need to know number of petals please! ! ! !

Still looking desperately for Saxifraga at Incita. About the sepals no idea. Saxifraga is wrong but you would not be the first one to confuse both species, ever some professional botanist must have been mixing them up.
Will start looking desperately for Wolffia if you do not give me the location. Or is it at the nursery?

HCW told us about the location of Wolffia at Incita.

Puzzled:
You said that you do not know how many sepals the plant has.... but do you know what the plant is!! If yes, you should know the number of sepals / petals!

The sepals should be 4 if I remember it right. I know the plant when I see it, so never bothered about details. :)

So my boss is finding rare plants in Malta and not telling me
And I was going to tell him about the Lemna I found.

analysis

Post by MWP admin »

Pine lets analyse the clues.

Crucifers / Erophila verna:

Against:
Crucifers are usually raceme inflorescence while the photo shows a solitary flower. The descriptions I have says leaves are more obtuse/spatulate than those of the photo.

http://www.users.daelnet.co.uk/allinson ... -small.jpg

Favour:
Crucifers are 4 sepals, eatable for hungry jack, and maybe the photo is some week, malnutritioned plant. The world "mean" in the title might be refering to this not-typical form of the Erophila verna
:?: :?:

Alternatively, I had in mind the Rubiaciea Family (eg some galium), though the leaves are not perfectely whorls here

Well actually I am trying to remember about tiny plants with white flowers that are rare! And those 2 plants came out :)

Lemna is very common at Chadwick Lakes especially when the water lowers down.
