Romulea

Post by MWP admin »

The Romulea species are blossoming now. I have been to Xemxija/Mistra garigue and found the first flowers of this genus.

Question:
I know that Romulea ramiflora is common, but there is a similar species which is endemic to Malta and called Romulea melitensis. How can I distinguish between the two. One reference source says it has narrow petals, but for me it is still not enough. Any pics from the members?

Below are 3 photos of what I believe to be R. ramiflora as well as 2 photos of Romulea like flowers which are much more smallet and white. Are these the R. melitensis?

Your ID aid is well appreciated

Hope that today, all green fingered members were out in the countryside suring this perfect sunny winter day. If not regret it becasue some days of rain are ahead now

I suppose that your blue ones are R. melit. (which I have not seen yet), the whitish ones belong possibly to the group of R. columnae. Romulea is terribly difficult and need more investigations....

They are smaller from the pics posted in the original post. One source says that melitensis is smaller from ramiflora. haslam keys them from their tiny bracts (fleshy vs squamous/membranous).
