MWP Quiz for Jackpot and collegues

Post by MWP admin »

The perianth consists of 6 tepals or perianth segments; 3 external (=sepals) and 3 internal (=petals). The outer tepals are identical, arranged as an inverted T-shape, and are found spreading out. They have a hood-shaped structure, that is curved inwards as concave. They are purple or have many interescting purple patches with 3 longitudinal green veins. However, from their back, they generally look as maroon.

The inner tepals are arranged as a Y-shape of which the upper two are inconspicuous and arching over the stamenoid column forming a helmet, while the lower one is large, colourful, modified, lip-like structure (called laebllum). The labellum has 4 lobes. The margin is maroon or darkbrown, which turns to bright purple and then fades to pink or white towards the longitudinal axis. Along the paler parts there are numerous seperate irregular purple patches.

What is it?

I have good reasons to say that I think I know what this is!

Is it very rare?
Is it one of the earliest flowerers of its family?
Is it perhaps the largest local representatve of its family?

I 'd say that the answer to all the above is yes (I think that rather than four lobed the labellum should be considered as three lobed with the central lobe being divided into two)- I'm sure that Pine and Wolf could also have a good idea of what it could be.

But since the quiz is intended for jackpot I will leave it up to him :!:

there are 2 interpretations about the lobes, but the 3 lobes would be botanically correct too.

Shhhh!!!! You are giving too much hints to Jackpot - You made it easy now!
