Live your life - do it ! don't be a spectator !
I myself embark on many such "adventures" both on land and also underwater. If diving a "new" site, you often have the added danger (choice) of the exit being in a different, and unexplored place, as well as the wave situation changing in the 90 minutes / 2 hours that you may be submerged. In spite ...

1) I don't mind the heat ( often stay on the beach from 9.30 - 7PM) 2) I found - and photographed - many plants that were of real interest ( to me at least, possibly first time this late in the season for me). 3) I don't smoke and hardly drink, so my only real vice is UV absorption. But nevertheless...

Thanks Stephen, no urgent panic though on my behalf. Today I tried an experiment. Got the bus to Mgarr, walked all round Wied Santi, Wied il-Hmar and Wied Il-Gnejna, - up to the top of a fortified hill ( Il-Gudja). Then down to the beach at Gnejna, ( cold orange juice !) back up the cliff to the cav...

I know it is " TUT" but what is the real name?
Have been trying to learn " Tommy tuta, tuta tyba" etc etc etc for 25 years--today was the first time I ate one--magnificent! Now, I want to know all about it. The tree I found has its roots in sea water! Is this a preference of the plant? Are they common? Do they fruit and flower at the same times ...

Short lunch by walking right round Salina
Love to know the English for " tut" they were EXTREMELY tasty !
Finally got some decent pics of Il Mazzarrel ( Dragonflies) today too. Managed to spot an " anqbut"...as well as a Spanish Dancer ( Nudibranch) near the surface.
Hope you like the pics.
Ian.

Good morning Stephen, It is a specific interest of mine-the old Maltese words. The biggest disappointment to me though is, when I DO find an old, traditional word ( example;- dragonfly -- il- Mazzarrel. NOT " il-Helicopter" !) and mention it to my numerous Maltese friends, they either " never heard ...

Thanks Sigra--I saw an IDENTICAL bush today-the same in every way---except the flowers were very bright red ! I assume it is the same plant anyway? Always been yellow before !( In the ruined building on the way to Mgarr) I really feel stupid because I can't find plants on the site because I don't ha...

Large Yellow bells on woody shrub?
I seem to have no luck whatsoever, at any time, being able to identify flowers by colour-perhaps I am simply mentally retarded ( mentally " challenged" ?) .As an example I am VERY familiar with the large woody shrub, with(6inches) yellow bells all over Malta --usually used as boundary plants. A frie...

Open day at the Gaia nursery--Bajja Tal Mixquqa
Went here on Sunday. Good to see the labelling of plants in English / Maltese / Latin--well worth a visit here to really identify the local plants and flowers. The lady ( Carmen I think) is a real expert on natural remedies and potions, how to prepare them and what they treat. I don't agree with man...

Gaiai Foundation Nursery- Il-Bajja tal-Mixquqa
Went to the open day last Sunday--really interesting, at least I got to see plants labelled in English & Maltese as well as Latin. Although I do not agree with all their aims, they certainly are informative about plants. The lady ( Carmen I think) is an expert on all the herbal recipes and medicines...

Another one of my most favourite walks is along the valley that comes into the sea at Mistra Bay. I usually begin under the bridge on the approach road, near the Palace, then follow the valley right through to Id-Delli--a farmer once told me that locally it is called "Kalkara" valley ( Lime-burning?...

Thankyou--I usually take far more than I need, but with digital it is definitely the best way to go. I use automatic batch processing, which helps to cut down a lot on the time, but I still have over 300 from this week alone to "file". I hope more people start to post their own pics, it would make a...

Gnien Garnaw
This week I got the bus from Qawra to Mellieha and got off near the roundabout at Ghadira. I walked up the hill and then took the first rough track off to the left, and followed Gnien Garnaw through the fields right up to the punic caves. Then returned down the next valley to the West ( Wied San Nik...

Thanks very much Stephen. Mystery solved. - Actually, I didn't wonder for " several months" a soon as I saw the tree, I thought " aha! Malta Wild Plants will know!". Also I thought it might stimulate a bit more interest in the forum too. I didn't want to pick too many Quinces, so don't have enough f...

Weird fruit-not apple or lemon...
Did a long walk yesterday across the fields ( Ghadira to Qawra Point) on the way (in the beautiful "Kalkara Valley"--near Xemxija) I found a fruit tree with strange fruits on it. They taste a little like apple-quiet sweet, but in shape they resemble a lemon. They have a very strong smell as unbroken...

Palazzo Tal L' Isqoff.
For anyone interested, this is the original palace that apparently was swapped for Manoel Island. The stone in its wall says "23 Augusto 1792". To get there;- Follow the main road to Busket. Under some trees is usually a vegetable wagon on the right next to a small razzett. But nearby is a perfect ma...

Looking for the Archbishop's Palace-Rabat woods.
Managed eventually to find the Palazzo ta L' Isqoff--fantastic area for wild plants too. Sorry to see the ceiling has started to collapse in the last rains. Outside are these strange markings in the cement--I wonder if they could be caused by ivy, since removed, digging into the mortar? A pleasant c...

Two plants seen last Sunday?
The small yellow flower is common but only about 5 mm diameter?
The green plant (herb?) is always inside caves and, in this case in a Punic tomb at the cart ruts. A Maltese friend thinks it is a type of parsley (Turcine?) any ideas please?

I have a short video clip I took of two of the "rare" fresh water crabs sparring in the stream-three weeks ago if anyone is interested;-
