Could someone please identify this.
I dont have a pic with open wings which makes it more difficult to identify.

Yes, you are right, a photo of the upperside would have been nice.

I am pretty sure that it is a Small White (Pieris rapae).

The only other possibility on Malta is Large White (Pieris brassicae) which is roughly the size of Painted Lady. Judged in comparison to the flower it does not look that big. The Small White is visibly smaller than the Large White.

Furthermore, the black spot on the apex of the forewing is black on the Large White and greyish on the Small White - and I can see a small glimpse of the edge of the upperside of the forewing, and it looks grey.

As far as I know, they are both common on Malta.
