moss in pot

Post by IL-PINE » Wed Dec 08, 2010 12:22 pm

trying to propagate Selaginella and Adiantum. Managed Adiantum from spores. Now some moss proliferating well - these are some mosses growing for Valerandi :p
Sorry but that was the best resolution I could do!

Thanks

Would be appreciated if different kind of moss species will be posted in different posts - it keeps things more orgaised and easy to follow.

Although moss 3 (also next to moss 2) could be a Bryum, (a microscopical photo of the leaf sells would confirm), I would bet that its a member of the Funariaceae...an Entosthodon sp. or Funaria hygrometrica. They love high nutrients, grow with potted plants and look exactly like that. Without a sporophyte it would be practically impossible to say which species.

Moss 2 and 4 need a microscopical photograph to get any idea of even which family they belong to.

There is also what appears to be Fissidens sp. between moss 3.

A very interesting pot. A perfect miniature moss garden in a pot which are prized by the Japanese.

regards
Stephan

Thanks Stephan!
These mosses were started when i brought a piece of moss from a valley (unfortunately I don't remember from where). In a few months they colonised almost the whole pot, and new mosses appeared.
Hopefully will give pieces to MWP so he can photograph them with a microscope if he wishes.

Cheers
Owen
