another one without ID

Post by chea » Tue Nov 24, 2015 1:47 pm

My biggest problem is to identify faded plants. This one I've found at Chadwick Lakes, 25th May 2015.
Plant height: 60 cm
Thanks and regards
Monika

I haven't even seen Cynoglossum creticum flowering. I only know it from pictures.

Good one Pine! For some reason my subconscious suggested Anchusa azurea which I knew it wasn't but now I realise why, I get these two confused...

No actually but the Anchusa is very tempting... just never got round to collecting seeds at the right time...

Anchusa azurea is a very beautiful flower. But I haven't seen it till now. In Switzerland we have Anchusa arvensis (light blue) and Anchusa officinalis (dark blue).

It usually flowers in late spring, is not very common, usually in disturbed ground - in fields that are left fallow, etc. I believe this is also a cultivated flowering plant, probably with care the flower display is much more impressive, I once grew Verbascum sinuatum and it bore little comparison to the specimens found in the wild - much larger flowers and plant.

Similarly in Sicily wild plants seem to grow larger... Giant fennel grows commonly well over 2m tall. More water, deeper soils.

yes very showy. never cultivated it myself - same problem, collecting seeds in may/june not my favourite time!

cynoglossum creticum I always manage to grow for a few months then they wither and die, just before flowering!

Probably too much water - probably needs growing in pure compost as it is difficult to maintain correct humidity levels in a pot when using any local soil. I tend to lose Cistus that way, this year have sown in a mix of compost and a decent percentage of Etna lava sand which makes the medium very very free draining. Same with Sage, very sensitive to water in Summer (hates it...)

I follow your debate with interest. It is difficult to grow wild plants. That's why I only have wild flowers in my garden, which have gone up by itself.
I'm going to show our Anchusa. They are not in my garden, I found them on the edge of a corn field.
