PAPAVERACEAE

Poppy Family

Type of herbs forming a relatively small botanical family. Most species of poppy have large, showy flowers, and basal rosettes of hairy leaves. All plants in this family exude a bitter, milky juice when cut a defence against herbivorous animals. Poppies have played an important role in medicine for the past millennium; in particular, opium poppies. Powerful drugs, such as opium, morphine, and codeine are derived from a thick, whitish fluid that oozes out when the flower-heads are lacerated. These herbaceous plants have a milky or watery juice. The leaves mostly are divided and compound. Their flowers are usually large with 2 or less common 3 sepals which falls out when flower opens up. 4-6 petals, often crumpled initially. numerous stamens, and fruit is a top-shaped capsule which could either be operculate (opens up) or non operculate, closed but contain perforated slits from where seeds escapes through.

RANUNCULACEAE

Buttercup Family

The Ranunculaceae are herbs or rarely shrubs or vines comprising 50 genera and 2,000 species. The leaves are typically alternate, compound, and lacks stipules (An appendage at the base of petioles or leaves, resembling a small leaf). The flowers are actinomorphic (symmetrical about more than one vertical plane.) or less commonly zygomorphic (symmetrical about one plane only, usually the plane that bisects the flower vertically). Flowers are usually bisexual, few and solitary. The perianth is often 5-merous divided that may or may not be differentiated into calyx and corolla. The petals bears nectar pockets near the base, and in Genus of the Ranunculus, there is a flap of tissue in this position. Typical flowers have many helically disposed stamens and simple pistils on an elongated receptacle. All of the floral parts are distinct. Each pistil has a superior ovary with one locule and 1-several parietal ovules. A single flower commonly produces a cluster of achenes or follicles. Many botanists consider this to be one of the most primitive of the plant families. Also, many members of this family are poisonous to man and stock. Many are grown for ornamental purposes.
